23ft Electric Dayboat Naval Architecture for DeAntonio
The E23 is the official electric boat of the 37th America's Cup in Barcelona.
Regular client De-Antonio commissioned Ker Yacht Design (KYD) to handle the naval architecture and engineering for a 23ft battery-electric boat concept created by De Antonio’s design team.
Although the original brief from De Antonio was for a monohull based on the D32 hull that KYD had recently designed for them, the team at Ker Design, with their extensive experience in foil-assisted catamarans, advised that a foil-assisted catamaran would be a more efficient solution. This would allow the battery-powered vessel to travel further at the target speeds. Persuaded by the efficiency arguments, De Antonio agreed, and the KYD team began an in-depth hull and foils development exercise using extensive CFD on a supercomputer.
Ker Design’s thorough development work resulted in a novel combination of features and led to a patent application to commercialize its IP resulting from its significant investment in research and design.
To help keep the E23 as light as possible, cored construction was used throughout, with thermoformed cores in the curved areas to minimize resin uptake in the infusion process. This meticulous approach not only contributed to the efficiency and performance of the electric boat but also enabled a long life on the water.
